THURS FEB 12TH SIDE ROOM CINEMATHEQUE: 3 FEATURE FILMS on the THEME of CRAZY LOVE:
L’age D’or (Luis Bunuel, 1930, 1h)
Violently banned for fifty years in France, denounced by Fascist Italy and Spain; the absurd psychological drives and absurder global obstacles both depicted in and provoked by “L’age D’or” continued to prove Bunuel’s point. Or points.
4k KINO-LORBER restoration
First Love (Takashi Miike, 2019, 1h48m)
This pan-Asian auteurs-san-frontiers crime opera finds Miike returning to chaotic anti-form and then transcending even that. Sublimely expert statement/document on/of the concepts of crime and borders and culture and customs.
*presented in BluRay
A Life Less Ordinary (Danny Boyle, 1997, 1h43m)
The third (and supposedly shakiest) leg of the Scottish indie-cine tripod of 90’s crime-adjacent films directed by Boyle, written by John Hodge and starring Ewan Mcgregor (along with Shallow Grave and Trainspotting) is an grossly underrated table leg, providing much needed whimsey and surrealism to the aforementioned Glasgow Trilogy, a balance all 3 cinematic collaborators would continue to negotiate in their work rarely to as earnedly pleasing of results.
or maybe
Fool For Love (Robert Altman, 1985, 1h46m)
instead because I am having troubling find “A Life Less Ordinary” in BluRay and this genius lil Sam Shepard sleeper captures the toxic side of the insane side of love.
